How To Use This Website
What's the Big Idea behind this website? Please read the About Us page.
- Registering - Just click "Register" and you put in a first name, email address (This will NOT be visible to other users!) and a password. Done!
- Find a Location - In the Location Search box you can enter a country (e.g. Croatia), state (e.g. CA), a specific address or even a latitude and longitude (e.g. 44.754078,-76.931480). With the Latitude Longitude option, you could look at a specific runway in the database if you would like. For some of these you may need to zoom out to get the big picture view.
- Add an Emergency Runway - To add a runway you must be a registered user and logged in. Then follow these simple steps:
- Find the location you want to add an Emergency Runway by one of the above methods. This could be an abandoned airport, highway, wide road or a large flat field, etc. all of which should be free of power lines and any other obstructions. We recommend using the "Satellite" view to get the best and most accurate view.
- Click the "Add" button.
- The cursor will turn into a plus sign. You then click to place one end of the Emergency Runway and click again for the other end. Be as accurate as you can!
- A box will open where you enter a Rating and Comments. Add any comments you think might be useful (e.g. Tall trees on north side, etc.). Here are some examples on how to rate the "runway":
- "A" Range of Ratings: Abandoned runways (please don't add any types of runways that would already be in GPS systems), unused and large parking lots, large flat fields, straight obstructionless roads that have very little traffic, etc. In other words, great places to land if you're having an emergency.
- "B" Range of Ratings: Highways that are straight and obstructionless but have daytime traffic (B+ if not much traffic on down to B- for more traffic), fields that may have crops, etc.
- "C+": "Better than trees or buildings..."
- Click "Save" and you're done!
- View and/or Rate an Emergency Runway - Just click the "teardrop" on the runway and you can view all the existing ratings and comments and also the length in feet. If you wish you can also add your own rating and comments if you're familiar with this area. The more ratings and comments we have, the higher confidence we will have that it would indeed serve well as an Emergency Runway. Also rate and comment if you think it would not serve well in this function.
- Edit or Remove an Emergency Runway - If you are the original creator of the runway you may move the ends or delete it if you think it should be removed. Just click the "teardrop" marker on the runway and you'll see "Edit" and "Remove" links.
- Notify Zones - If you would like to be informed if someone enters an Emergency Runway near you (or anywhere!) you can create a "Notify Zone" and an email will be sent to you when that occurs. Simply click the "Add Notify Zone" button, click (and hold) at one corner of the area you're interested in and drag the cursor to the opposite corner of the area. You can create as many zones as you'd like and you can edit or remove them by clicking the "My Notify Zones" link in the login box.
- Download the Database - The complete database in human readable form is free and downloadable. Just click the "Download the Database" link on the home page.
To create a database that has both quantity and quality we need lots of pilots to enter Emergency Runways, so please Tell a Friend about this website.
